Retro-Commissioning (RCx) identifies problems with a building’s HVAC systems and produces engineering solutions to address these problems. EBI’s goal is to assess existing mechanical and electrical systems, identify potential improvements or solutions, provide economic analysis to justify best recommendations, and to assist in implementation and verification.

The RCx process provides financial benefits in addition to system reliability benefits. The economic payback of retro-commissioning (or “tuning-up”) existing HVAC, electrical, and lighting control systems is more attractive than other capital projects, as it often provides a shorter payback than replacing equipment or making system modifications. EBI is experienced in performing the economic analysis that allows the owner to make informed decisions.

Retro-Commissioning Services:

  • Energy Audit (Assessment) – overview to identify potential for energy efficiency measures and evaluate the building’s energy use.

  • Project Scoping – utility meter data analysis, identification of energy efficiency measures, some level of cost/benefit analysis, a site visit report, a plan, scope of work, and fee proposal.
  • Detailed Investigation – evaluation study of the facility is performed to determine costs and benefits with sufficient accuracy to justify investment in retro-commissioning.

  • Implementation & Verification – support to owners to oversee and manage the implementation of the recommendations in the investigation report and confirm "post condition" operations to verify achieved savings.
