In 1995, the EPA started a program known as the Brownfield Program in which helps communities work together to prevent, assess, clean up, and reuse brownfields.
A Brownfield is a property, its expansion, redevelopment, or reuse that may be contaminated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant (Brownfield Overview and Definition, 2015). In order to determine if your land has hazardous substances, or contaminants, you should have an Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) conducted on the property.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded approximately $15,994,000 in Brownfield Grants. These grants will go to organizations and cities in New England that are working to help protect the public’s health and wellness by cleaning up and assessing contaminated parcels in their communities. These grants will momentously help the New England states' efforts in assessing, cleaning up and redeveloping any contaminated properties in their communities. In addition to those services, these grants will also allow opportunity to upsurge local economies and create more jobs, while also protecting public health and the environment.
