The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is a 1976 federal framework, managed by the EPA, for hazardous waste disposal. RCRA designates proper handling and disposal of waste streams ranging from solid waste and non-hazardous materials to hazardous substances and medical waste. A later amendment made Underground Storage Tanks subject to RCRA. Facilities that receive, treat, store and/or dispose of regulated waste streams must comply with RCRA and maintain required permits and reporting.
